*Just to note, we will not be including Thursday night players in this write-up.
Top DraftKings high-priced plays ($7,000-$7,600)
Todd Gurley, Los Angeles Rams ($7,800)
Todd Gurley is one of the few workhorse backs left in the NFL and if you watched HBO’s Hard Knocks this season then you already know how valuable he is in the eyes of head coach Jeff Fisher. The Rams are a pretty good favorite to beat the San Fransico 49ers in week 1 which means that Gurley could be in for a big game with a lot of fantasy points piling on in the 4th quarter.
David Johnson, Arizona Cardinals ($7,500)
The Arizona Cardinals have huge expectations for their second-year running back David johnson this season and with a rookie season like he had it makes sense. The Cardinals will be going up against a New England Patriots team without Tom Brady and this could mean they will be in the lead majority of the game which means more handoffs to Johnson. Johnson is a dual threat and can beat teams in the running game and by catching the ball as well. If you are going to pay up at the running back position, you cannot go wrong with Johnson or Gurley in week 1.
Top DraftKings mid-priced plays ($5,100 – $6,900)
Doug Martin, Tampa Bay Buccaneers ($6,200)
Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Doug Martin is the definition of a boom or bust player (high ceiling but a low floor). This means he is perfect to play for GPPs when it comes to daily fantasy. The Buccaneers will face off with the Atlanta Falcons in week 1 which has the potential for Martin to have a big game. Martin’s price makes for an interesting play since he is right in the mid-price range.
Matt Forte, New York Jets ($6,100)
Everyone is talking about the New York Jets passing game with Ryan Fitzpatrick airing it out to Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker. But now they have running back Matt Forte to contribute on the ground. Forte still has quite a bit left in the tank and is out to prove he can still play at a high level. He will be overlooked (and low owned) in week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals which is exactly what you want in a GPP contest.
Top DraftKings low-priced plays ($5,000 and below)
Spencer Ware, Kansas City Chiefs ($4,400)
With the status of Jamaal Charles up in the air to start the season, one of the best bargains of week 1 will be his backup Spencer Ware. There is a good chance that Ware will be the starter this week against the San Diego Chargers. Ware stepped up in Charles’ absent last season and finished with an average of 5.6 yards per carry with six touchdowns. Ware will provide great value this week if he ends up starting.
James White ($3,600)
James White is in a perfect position to be the biggest sleeper pick at running back in week 1. The Patriots are projected to be playing from behind in this game which means White will see the majority of the snaps. Also, Jimmy Garoppolo will be checking down a lot to his running back with pressure from the Arizona Cardinals defense so White could end up with quite a few catches in this game.
