Last season the Tampa Bay Buccaneers finished 26th in the NFL in points allowed with an average of 26.1 points per game. The Buccaneers did finish 10th overall in yards allowed on defense last year, but still finished with a 6-10 record.
Linebacker Lavonte David believes that his team will make a huge improvement from last season. David had some interesting words for Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times saying:
I think we can be the best defense ever, to be honest. I’m going to go out there and say it. Yeah, I’m going to say it. Put it on me. I’m going to say it. NFL history, Bucs history, anything. That’s just the type of attitude we have.
David has some high expectations for this upcoming season. In order for them to be in consideration of one of the best defenses ever, they will need to outperform the 2000 Baltimore Ravens and the 1985 Chicago Bears.
The Ravens finished the 2000 season by allowing just 10.3 points per game. In a different era, the ’85 Bears allowed 12.4 points per game during the season. Both the Ravens and Bears ended their seasons with a Super Bowl victory. I personally don’t see the Buccaneers even coming close to being the best defense ever.
